UnBuilding (2010-13)

From 2010 to 2025, it is estimated that 300 million Chinese now living in rural areas will move into cities. That equates to integration of about 70% of China's population into cities by 2025. For many, daily life on the path to urbanisation involves unbuilding; the city, communities, livelihoods.

The photographs were made whilst working as an architect on projects in China and the Middle East. Some of the images were taken from and around the hotel where I regularly stayed in Shengyang whilst visiting a glazing factory. Others were made during an extended stay on a building site in Shanghai, and weekend trips to Beijing.
